Where to ShopProvincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod, is a shopper’s dream. Commercial Street, the town’s main thoroughfare, is a colorful patchwork of shops and activities. Luxurious stores offering high-end clothing are nestled against open-air storefronts with kites and toys, which may share a wall with a store selling items that promise to improve your love life. While you shop and stroll the street, you’re surrounded by a carnival of artists, tourists, intellectuals, gays, fishermen, and hordes of every other kind of people, enjoying the day. Whether you’re looking for a $2,000 watch or a $2 kite, shopping in Provincetown is an experience you’ll never forget. P’town, as it is often called, is famous as an artist colony, and today excellent art is featured in lots of galleries and stores. Most of the galleries are in the East End, including Berta Walker, who nurtured many top artists. Antiques and collectibles are another great buy here. Remembrances of Things Past specializes in antiques, memorabilia, and Art Deco items. Clothing stores abound, and their wares can be simple or sophisticated. Try Mad As A Hatter for – you guessed it – fabulous hats. Moda Fina has a wonderful selection of women’s clothing and accessories, including luscious summer dresses. The guys will want to check out Body Body, the largest men’s clothing store in town. You can’t go home without souvenirs. How about a book? Provincetown Bookstore offers an excellent selection. Cape Kites stocks toys, kites, and other whimsical items. Provincetown Soap Works has a heavenly assortment of body-care items. Home décor items (which also make wonderful souvenirs) are featured in oodles of P’town shops. Roots for the Home and Garden offers furnishings and décor, including one-of-a-kind handwoven rugs. Wa, which means “harmony” in Japanese, is a soothing Zen-like space with decorative home items. Provincia offers ceramics and other goods with a Portuguese flavor. If you’re low on energy, check out Whaler’s Wharf, where shopping is under one roof. This two-story complex of shops is a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon (especially in rainy weather). It also has a very good restaurant on the top floor, Ross’ Grill. Provincetown is quirky, and many people don’t want to go home without experiencing a slice of the unusual. One store, Spank the Money, is not for the faint of heart but is often good for a laugh. Marine Specialties is a must-see, with the oddest assortment of goods this side of the Atlantic. If you love shopping, you’ll adore Provincetown. Just be sure to plan another trip back for all the shops you missed! by Mary Grauerholz |
